The bet of making a Webflow SEO app open source

One of the most common complaints I hear about Webflow is how closed it feels compared to WordPress . You can’t dig under the hood. You can’t easily build on top. You don’t know what’s coming next.

Not because it’s trendy. Not because it’s a clever marketing move.

But because the Webflow community deserves better tools—and a real part in shaping them.

Better SEO makes better website. SEO is too important to be hidden behind paywalls.

What drives the open source decision?

I believe Webflow biggest assets it's the community they built. Being part of the Webflow community brings me so much. It's time to give back.

But also:

  • I don’t want the think about pricing, ROI, or ARR. I want to focus on the value we deliver to the community.

  • I don’t want people to just consume. I want you to contribute. If something doesn’t work, fix it. If something can be better, show us how.

  • I don't want money to stop people making better Website. I want the app to be free and contribue to make better websites, better businesses and a better Internet.

  • I want this app to last.

Most open source projects struggle with sustainability. I know that. It’s a bet.

I might be the only sponsor for now, but I believe SEO is too important to be locked behind a paywall.

I'm fine paying for this since Webflow and SEO offered me so much already.

Why now?

Over the past 9 months, I’ve wanted to build this Webflow app—but I just couldn’t, technically. And oh boy, I tried.

I tested Copilot, Cursor, Replit agent… I got to 95%. But that last 5%? Brutal.

I was vibe coding before it was cool!

Then I realized something: I suck at building software.

I love creating solutions, but I hate debugging. I don’t enjoy spending my days looking to fix typos.

What I love is Marketing and distributing product.

If only I could me someone who is the opposite...

That mindset shift opened new doors—and that’s how I met Paul Mulligan.

With Paul’s passion for solving problems, we’re now almost ready to publish our first Webflow app.

What’s next?

Let me return the question, what can you do next?
